Young climber found dead on mountain after rescue operation

The body of a young man was discovered on a Skye mountain range after rescuers responded to reports of a person falling near a summit.

At around 5pm on Sunday, the Skye Mountain Rescue Team were called to Bidean Druim nan Ramh.

A total of 26 rescuers were drafted into what was described as an “exhausting and at times dangerous search and recovery”.

The man’s body was found at around 10.30pm on Sunday on the Cuillin range.

Local people and visiting army personnel answered a late-night call for provisions put out on social media and reserver mountain rescue team members delivered the sandwiches and snacks to those of the slopes at 4am on Monday.

The rescuers did not return until 8am on Monday.

Neil Urquhart, Skye Mountain Rescue Team leader, said: “A total of 26 team members were involved in an exhausting and at times dangerous search and recovery.

“Our sincere condolences go to the family, loved ones and friends of the young climber.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers assisted mountain rescue partners to a report that a climber had fallen in the Cuillins area of the Isle of Skye on Sunday, August 15, 2021.

“The male climber was located and sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
