Aberdeen Market gets go-ahead by council following Covid

Aberdeen City Council granted planning permission for a new market in the heart of the city .

The development, Aberdeen Market, is expected to be a “destination venue”, according to the local authority, featuring international-style food and drink outlets.

The approved proposal also highlights plans for a pedestrian link from Union Street to bus and railway stations via The Green, and will “enliven Hadden Street and Market Street with urban realm improvements in and around The Green”.

The development is set to have a market-style floorspace, with venues selling local and international fare.

It will also feature an outdoor, canopy-covered space for music events or further market space.

Aberdeen City Council city growth and resources convener Councillor Alex McLellan said: “We look forward to seeing the market development come to fruition, as it will be a real asset for our city centre and it will provide a strong platform for small and start-up businesses.”

In May 2021, the city growth and resources committee agreed to the purchase of the former Aberdeen Market and BHS building to create the destination venue as part of the city’s recovery plan for Covid-19.

Planning permission for the site was submitted in November 2021.

The central section of Union Street and Aberdeen Market are critical components in the ‘Heart of the City’ area of intervention identified in the approved City Centre Masterplan from 2015.
