A number of road restrictions in Aberdeen have been extended by up to two months after asbestos was discovered underground.

The temporary closures were put in place to allow for the replacement of an underground electricity cable between Redmoss Substation and Clayhills Substation, which is over a distance of 5km.

During the works to replace the 132kV cables, which are reaching the end of life, contractors found asbestos and identified several deformities affecting the ducts which the cable will pass through.

If the issues aren’t dealt with now, the SSEN believe the large scale project would face even longer delays.

Sections of Aberdeen’s Ferryhill Road and Wellington Road will remain shut for up to four months.

Michael Dunn, senior project Manager for SSEN Transmission, said: “The Redmoss and Clayhills Substations form an integral part of the overall Aberdeen City 132kV ring network, and this major cable replacement project is vital in maintaining a secure, reliable supply of power for the city in line with our goal to aim for 100% transmission network reliability for homes and businesses.

“While unforeseen delays are not uncommon for large-scale projects of this nature, SSEN Transmission continues to work closely with its principal contractor Balfour Beatty and Aberdeen City Council to minimise disruption wherever possible, while ensuring that work is carried out safely and to the highest possible standard.

“While activity may not be apparent in some locations, ongoing restrictions are required to allow for ongoing and eventual full system testing of the cable replacement.

“This is considered essential to ensure the effectiveness of the system and will ultimately avoid the potential for any additional delays to the project at the end stage.”
