Aberdeenshire pupils crowned champions at national Glee Choir competition

Pupils from Aberdeenshire sang their hearts out to be crowned champions at a national competition.

Primary 6 and 7 pupils from Elrick primary school took part in the annual Glee Choir, which sees children incorporate singing and dancing into their performances.

There were 40 young superstars participating in the event at Dundee Caird Hall, up against 148 schools across Scotland.

This year’s theme was centred around space, as they won their first ever national competition in the Frisson Foundation’s Glee Choir Challenge.

The songs performed were Major Tom (Coming Home) followed by David Bowie’s Space Oddity to lead them to the number one spot.

The young performers said they said they were “screaming” and some were “crying” with happiness when they found out they had won.

One said, “we worked really hard to put this all together” and added that “we put in a lot of team work as well.”

The club is limited to kids only in P6 and P7 due to the great amount of interest.

This year’s choir saw just over 60 pupils wanting to take part. An audition process was needed to get the number down to 40.

Depute headteacher Jenny Anderson has led the group for seven years.

She said she was “so proud” of her pupils, who put in months of practice leading up to the competition.

She said: “I am just delighted with them and just so proud of how they carried themselves, through the competition, how they supported each other, how they supported other teams and made friends.”

However, this will be the last time that Jenny leads the choir as she passes the role to teacher Robyn Smith who has been involved in the group.

Ms Anderson said she will “really miss” being part of the club.

Next year’s Glee Choir will mark ten years since the challenge started by the children’s Scotland-based charity Frisson Foundation.
