Walkers Shortbread will pay its staff all their due wages despite halting production.
The company, which has its headquarters in Aberlour, Moray, ended its food production on Thursday in a bid to keep staff safe during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement it said: “The safety and well-being of employees is the paramount consideration of the company.
“Whilst strenuous efforts have been made to ensure that social distancing and the highest standards of hygiene are firmly in place, the company has listened to the genuine concerns of employees and has taken this difficult decision.”
The company said all staff will receive full pay during this time and that those who can work remotely will be asked to do so.
At present, they expect production to resume on April 20.
Moray MSP, Richard Lochead, welcomed the decision saying: “This is the right decision for the workforce and company.
“I am particularly delighted that staff will continue to receive full pay and urge all employers to follow their example. I have been in regular contact with the company in recent days and know this is a difficult time for everyone.
“We look forward to getting through this and this incredible company getting back to doing what it does best – making some of the world’s best products.”
