Body of 72-year-old recovered from river after 'unexplained death'

Police have recovered the body of a 72-year-old man from a river in Angus.

Emergency services attended the scene at around 3.35pm on Saturday after reports of a body in the River South Esk in Montrose.

Police Scotland said the death is being treated as “unexplained” but added that there were no “apparent suspicious circumstances”.

A spokesperson said: “We were made aware of the body of a man seen in the River South Esk near Montrose Bridge around 3.35pm on Saturday.

“The body of a 72-year-old man was recovered a short time later with the assistance of the RNLI.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”

A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard attended an incident at Montrose just after 3.50pm on September 30.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Montrose, Stonehaven and Arbroath, a Montrose RNLI lifeboat and the ambulance service were sent.”
