A campaign has been launched to save a Marks and Spencer’s food hall in Aberdeen, which is facing closure after more than a decade.

The supermarket giant announced the food hall at Stoneywood in the city is to close after it was deemed no longer “viable” for the company.

M&S closed its former flagship Aberdeen branch at St Nicholas Street last year, but expanded its Union Square store.

More than 1,300 people have now signed a petition calling for a rethink of the plans.

The online petition explains: “This store has been a staple in our neighbourhood, not only providing quality products but also fostering a sense of community and convenience for residents and visitors.

“The closure of this store will pose significant challenges to our community, especially for those who rely on it as an essential service.”

However, M&S said in a statement that the store was no longer viable as it “does not align” with its future store format vision.

Scott Munro, M&S Regional Manager, said: “Customer shopping habits are changing, and as part of our UK-wide store rotation programme, we’re adapting our store estate to ensure we have the right stores with the right space to deliver an excellent shopping experience.

“The Stoneywood Foodhall has been part of north Aberdeen for ten years. Unfortunately, it is not viable to keep the store open as it does not align with our future store format vision and faces upcoming investment requirements that we must prioritise for long-term growth decisions.

“We know this will be disappointing for customers, and our priority is supporting colleagues through consultation, including finding alternative roles at nearby stores like Bridge of Don, Westhill and Union Square, wherever possible, should the proposals go ahead.

“We will continue serving Stoneywood customers through those stores and online.”
