Candlelight vigil held in Elgin for bus driver Keith Rollinson who died after alleged assault

A candlelight vigil has been held for a bus driver who was allegedly murdered by a teenage boy at an Elgin bus station.

Locals gathered outside St Giles Church to mourn much-loved dad-of-two Keith Rollinson on Saturday February 10.

Police and paramedics were called to Mr Rollinson’s aid at a bus station in Elgin at around 10.40pm on Friday February 2.

He was rushed to Dr Gray’s Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

A lone piper played at the vigil as dozens gathered to pay their respects.

A photo of Mr Rollinson with the Stagecoach logo was placed on the steps alongside candles and flowers.

The writing underneath read: “In honour of Keith Rollinson.

“We gather as a community to recognise a life given to serving his country and community.

“To think of Keith’s family and demonstrate – as a city united – our concern and love in the midst of this tragedy.”

The Stagecoach driver’s family say their world has been “shattered.”

Mr Rollinson’s family, in a statement released via Police Scotland, said: “On Friday, February 2 the kindest, dedicated and loving husband and father was taken from us.

“Our world has been shattered I cannot see us ever getting over our loss of our rock.

“We would like to ask for privacy at this time to deal with the loss without intrusion.”

Stagecoach said it was “shocked and saddened” by incident, which led to the closure of Elgin bus station and the cancellation of numerous services.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach North Scotland said: “We are shocked and saddened by this news and our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of our driver who has sadly passed away.

“Safety is our number one priority and incidents like this are extremely rare. We are doing everything we can to support our colleagues and our driver’s family as well as assisting the police in their investigation.”

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with the alleged murder of Mr Robinson on Monday February 5.

He made no plea and was committed for further examination and remanded in custody until his next appearance, which is set to take place at a later date.
