Care home resident becomes one of the oldest women in the UK at 107

A Scottish woman has become one of the oldest in the UK.

Rosella Lamont joined the ranks as she celebrated her 107th birthday last weekend.

Born and raised in Aberdeen, she celebrated her birthday at the city’s Grandholm Care Home.

Ms Lamont has experienced quite a life since leaving school at fourteen to work in Crombie Woollen Mill in Grandholm as a trainee weaver.

The mill was renowned as one of Aberdeen’s largest textile plants and was responsible for allowing thousands of women to join the workforce in the twentieth century.

Grandholm Care Home, where Ms Lamont now lives, sits on the same site as the former wool mill.

When asked if she had any advice for younger generations, Ms Lamont said: “It’s important to try your best to be happy, and stay healthy, and keep up to date with your loved ones and what’s going on in life.

“If I had one piece of advice for young people, it would be just don’t be daft. Oh, and make sure to watch what you’re doing with your money.”

The 107-year-old celebrated in style with staff at the Aberdeen care home throwing a party to commemorate the milestone.

The home was filled with balloons as residents turned out to celebrate Ms Lamont and enjoy a delicious birthday cake.

Val Buchan, manager at Grandholm Care Home, said: “All the staff and residents at Grandholm had a brilliant time celebrating Rosella’s 107th Birthday, it was a great day.

“Rosella is an amazing lady and truly remarkable for her age – she still joins in with arts and crafts activities at the home and is always making us laugh.”

Ms Lamont also received a special visit from the Lord lieutenant of Aberdeenshire, the King’s representative for the region.
