Disgraced surgeon Sam Eljamel lied on CV and continued to train students, inquiry hears

Dundee University was not told by NHS Tayside that surgeon Sam Eljamel was under supervision, so he continued to train medical students.

An inquiry into the neurosurgeon heard on Wednesday that Eljamel had his Honorary professorship renewed by the university in the same week that the Royal College of Surgeons recommended that he be suspended.

Eljamel was a consultant neurosurgeon at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee from 1995 until his suspension in December 2013.

A public inquiry is taking place after patients of Mr Eljamel raised concerns that he had harmed as many as 200 people.

Jamie Dawson KC, senior counsel to the inquiry, put it to Professor Rory McCrimmon from Dundee University that Eljamel lied on his CV that he held senior positions at the institution.

Mr Dawson said: “Amongst the entries on [his CV], was the claim that he held the role within the university of head of department section for surgical neurology at the University of Dundee from around 1996, which we know that he did not hold, is that correct?”

Prof McCrimmon replied: “We can find no evidence that such a department existed.

Mr Dawson asked: “He lied on his CV didn’t he?”

“Yes, I’m afraid he did,” was Prof McCrimmon’s response.

The inquiry, taking place before Lord Weir in Edinburgh, continues.
