A mum from Dundee says her family has been left “broken” after a security guard allegedly attacked her daughter and niece during a ‘nightmare’ holiday at a Tunisian hotel.

The girls, aged 13 and 17, were on holiday at the Delphin El Habib in Monastir with their family for a birthday celebration.

The pair were on the hotel dancefloor when a member of staff reportedly tried to kiss and grope them on September 25.

An altercation occurred between the security guard and the 17-year-old’s boyfriend, whilst the 13-year-old told her mum about the incident.

The party informed staff of the incident, and the police were called.

STV News understands that two women from the UK were also allegedly attacked on the same night.

The hotel has said that a security guard was arrested following the incident and that the family were provided with return flights to Scotland.

The specialised unit for investigating crimes of violence against women and children in Monastir has taken control of the case.

The security guard has been charged following the incident and was due to appear in court on September 27.

Since returning home, the 17-year-old has been in hospital due to issues caused by stress following the attack.

The 13-year-old has not returned to school.

Her mum told STV News: “I think she is struggling to process what happened.

“We’ve been on holidays to places like Türkiye in the past, and never have we ever felt unsafe. The fact that it was a security guard who breached our safety has made us all lose faith.

“The person who was meant to protect them has done this. It makes you question everyone and everything.

“It has changed the way we holiday. If we go away, it will be a villa, an Airbnb, or a private residence where we know that when we lock the door, we are safe.

“This has changed everything. The aftermath of the incident will probably be worse than the incident because of the long-term effects.”

The angered mum says the impact of the incident has left the family “absolutely broken.”

She added: “I have not only watched that happen to my niece and daughter, but I’ve watched my son broken because he couldn’t protect his sister and my dad broken because he couldn’t protect his two granddaughters.

“My niece’s boyfriend is broken because he couldn’t protect his girlfriend. It has affected everybody. It has completely broken us.

“What was meant to be a happy occasion, celebrating three of the party turning 18, has turned into an absolute nightmare.”

An FCDO spokesperson said: “We are supporting several British families in Tunisia. Our staff stand ready to support British nationals 24/7.”
