Dundee City Council looks set to grant permission for an opening hour extension for pubs during this summer’s World Cup.

The national team will head to North America this summer for their first World Cup appearance since 1998.

Both Aberdeen and Glasgow licensing chiefs have already granted permission for pubs there to stay open later during the competition.

Now, council licensing chiefs are proposing to allow for extended opening hours for Dundee pubs.

Licencing board councillors will discuss the proposed general extension of opening hours at a meeting next week.

Accompanying papers outline that this would be between June 11 and July 19.

It is further detailed that for all tournament matchdays, qualifying premises may open until 1am or 15 minutes after any 11pm kick-off match ends, whichever is later.

Where the fixtures involve the Scotland Men’s National Team, premises may remain open until 15 minutes after the match ends.

It comes after Labour councillor George McIrvine called for an extension of opening hours last month.

At the time, he said: “There is a lot of appetite for this.

“I think over the weeks before, during, and after Christmas, people have been speaking about it in the pubs and clubs.

“Flexibility during the World Cup will allow pubs and social clubs to open their doors to the many supporters who are excited at the prospect of seeing Scotland progress.”
