A teenager with cerebral palsy has been left with a fractured hip after an e-scooter rider hit his wheelchair and fled the scene.

Jack Mcnaughton was crossing Strathmore Avenue opposite the Travelodge hotel in Dundee at around 10.15pm on Saturday.

The 17-year-old checked both ways before edging out in his wheelchair but, as he was making his way across the road, an e-scooter crashed into him and knocked him out of the chair.

The male rider, who was wearing dark clothing and a dark knitted hat, made off in the direction of Lawton Road.

After being taken to Ninewells Hospital A&E, Jack phoned his parents.

The teenager has been left with a cut down the right side of his nose, a fractured right hip, dislocated wrists, and a suspected broken nose.

Jack’s dad Graham told STV: “We’re looking at a minimum of six to eight weeks for recovery, with a lot of physiotherapy.

“The psychological side is going to take a lot longer. This is going to play havoc with his mind.

“The biggest challenge will be getting him out and about after he is back healthy.

“I don’t know how anybody could leave Jack there.

“It is bad enough doing it to an able-bodied person, but do it to someone in a wheelchair and then leaving them lying in the road is disgusting.”

Jack, who lives with cerebral palsy, has an attachment on his wheelchair called a Batec, which allows him to travel independently.

The piece of tech has been irreversibly destroyed following the crash.

A fundraiser has been launched to replace the vital wheelchair.

Graham said: “It has done massive damage to the chair, it looks like it has been driven over by a bus.

“Without this kit, Jack can’t get about.

“He can’t get out of bed without his wheelchair. The bit of kit that attaches the wheelchair allows him to leave the house independently and have a life as normal as he can have.”

Police are appealing for anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.

Inspector Jamie Allen said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to trace this male, and we would ask him to come forward.

“I am also urging anyone who was in the area at the time to please get in touch or has any knowledge as to the identity of the e-scooter rider.

“If you have private CCTV or dash-cam footage that would also assist our enquiries, please contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 4202 of May 10.
