Climate activists aiming to drive SUVs off the road in Scotland have claimed responsibility for deflating the tyres of 20 vehicles in Dundee.

Some residents in the Craigiebarns and Broughty Ferry areas woke on Friday morning to find their car tyres deflated by eco vandals the Tyre Extinguishers.

The group targeted streets and driveways surrounding Craigiebarns and Eastern Primary School.

It is at least the third time that the group, calling themselves the DunDeeFlators, the local branch of the Tyre Extinguishers, have hit since May 13.

They have previously said their “end goal” was to make it “impossible” to own an SUV – which can contribute up to 25% more CO2 on average than smaller cars – in urban areas.

The vandalism in Dundee comes just one day after around 100 SUV owners in Edinburgh woke to find that their tyres had been deflated.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have received several reports of vehicle tyres being deliberately deflated in the Dundee area. This is a reckless and potentially dangerous act which could put drivers and road users at risk. Enquiries are ongoing to establish who is responsible.

“We would encourage members of the public to call us immediately if they see anyone acting suspiciously near to parked vehicles.

“I would also urge all drivers to check their vehicle before setting off and to contact the police on 101 should they suspect their vehicle has been tampered with.”
