Crews worked throughout Tuesday night to extinguish the fire before being called back out on Wednesday.

Fire crews have returned to the scene of a “deliberate” wildfire which broke out at a quarry in Moray.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at the Sunbank Quarry in Lossiemouth on Tuesday afternoon. Dozens of firefighters were sent to try to extinguish the flames.

Seven fire engines were sent to the scene as crews worked throughout the night to extinguish the fire.

Pictures of the incident showed a huge cloud of smoke sweeping across the area while flames edged closer to a new residential neighbourhood.

Emergency services were alerted to smoke in the area again at 9.14am on Wednesday and returned to the scene.

There are no reported casualties, but police are treating the fire as wilful and enquiries are said to be at an early stage.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.43pm on Tuesday, August 26, to reports of a large fire within a quarry in Lossiemouth.

“Operations Control mobilised seven appliances to the town’s Sunbank Quarry, where firefighters worked throughout the night to extinguish the fire.

“Crews re-attended the scene after being alerted to smoke in the area at 9.14am on Wednesday, August 27.

“Firefighters currently remain on scene working to eliminate remaining hotspots.

“There are no reported casualties.”

A Police Scotland statement read: “Around 4pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, officers were called to a report of a fire at a quarry near the A941 in Lossiemouth.

“The incident is being treated as wilful and enquiries are at an early stage.

“The A941, Inchbroom Road and Muirton Road have fully reopened.”
