Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a landfill site in Dunfermline with large amounts of rubbish and some machinery on fire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has urged people to avoid the area around Wellwood as far as possible after being called to Lochhead landfill site on Sunday afternoon.

Crews from four appliances are working to extinguish the blaze, which is affecting a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery.

Residents who live locally are being asked to keep their windows and doors closed.

Footage on social media showed large plumes of smoke being visible from miles away from the site.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We are currently in attendance at a fire within a landfill site in the Wellwood area of Dunfermline.

“Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire involving a large quantity of rubbish and some machinery.

“Please avoid the area as far as possible and, if you live locally, keep windows and doors closed.”
