Girl, 5, opens community library after local branch relocates

A five-year-old girl from Dundee has launched her very own community library after her nursery was no longer able to visit the local branch.

Ruby Jamieson came up with the idea after learning her nursery trips to borrow books had stopped when the library moved location.

She told STV News she felt “sad” when the visits ended.

Her dad, Gary Jamieson, said the idea came during a bedtime story:

“Ruby was telling me how disappointed she was that the nursery wasn’t going to the library anymore,” said Gary.

“We started talking about how some people create little community libraries outside their homes. We had a look online, and she just asked, ‘Can we do that?’ I said, ‘We can try!'”

The family applied for local community funding, which enabled them to stock the small library with a range of classic and contemporary children’s books.

The miniature library has already welcomed its first visitors from nurseries, childminders, and schools in the area.

Ruby said, “It makes me really happy that people enjoy the library.”
