Former Burger King on Aberdeen's Union Street could be taken over by Asian supermarket chain

A former Burger King restaurant in Aberdeen could be taken over by an Asian supermarket chain under newly released plans.

Matthew’s Foods, the firm behind the Asian supermarket on Causewayend, has submitted a planning warrant to the city council.

Bosses are looking to spend £120,000 on refurbishing the former fast food joint on Union Street.

The unit has been sitting empty for a year since Burger King closed its doors for the final time last September after more than three decades.

It was the first Burger King outlet in the city when it opened in the 1980s, but had been battling for business with sites elsewhere such as Queens Links and Union Square.

After being stripped of all fast food branding and furniture, the city centre unit was put on the market for sale with offers over £225,000,

It has ground and basement floors, and a huge selling point for potential buyers was its “prime corner position” on Union Street.

A brochure created by FG Burnett highlights the unit is situated across from the Music Hall and is surrounded by big names including Starbucks, Chaiiwala and the Co-op.

It also explains that the basement space provides storage, staff facilities and extra toilets.

Matthew’s Foods first opened in Aberdeen in 2005, marking the firm’s third branch.

As well as its supermarket, Matthew’s Foods is also behind the popular Manchurian restaurant located next door.

The dim sum and Chinese eatery offers takeaway or delivery for customers as well as a sit-in dining experience.

Eight other Matthew’s Foods supermarkets can be found in Inverness, Dundee, Kirkcaldy, Kilmarnock, Glasgow, and Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, it runs the Imperial Palace restaurant in Edinburgh and another Manchurian in Dundee.
