An educational group looking to transform a former military base into a space and science centre has launched its latest fundraising bid.
Aero Space Kinross Scientific Educational Trust (ASSET) wants to turn the locally known ‘golf ball’ into a facility that teaches children.
Hannah Nisbet, a former teacher who will be part of the team creating the educational programmes, said: “It’s about showing them the learning they can do through science and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects, it links so many things together.
“I think that ‘wow’ moment when kids see something happening in STEM or science is what we want to capture when they walk through the doors here.”
The group hopes to raise £500,000 to get the project into orbit, with a major renovation needed to transform the site.
For chairman of the group Alisdair Stewart, his passion that goes back to childhood.
He said: “It goes back to when my father put me on his shoulders when I was a wee laddie and took me to see interesting aeroplanes, and I’ve just been interested in aviation ever since.
“We believe we’ll create up to 50 jobs here and it’s going to inspire children to want to engage in science and technology, engineering and maths.
“It’s going to give the local community an opportunity to repurpose this historic site into something meaningful.”
