Giant Scottie dog walking trail set to be unleashed in Fife to raise money for Maggie's cancer charity

St Andrews and the East Neuk of Fife is set to be taken over by giant Scottie dogs.

The sculptures will be sponsored by local businesses and decorated by artists to create a colourful walking trail which will start in September.

Proceeds from the trail and final auction will go to the Maggie’s Centre.

Annie Long from Maggie’s Dundee told STV News the money will help support people living with cancer.

She said: “We have nearly 300 people in St Andrew’s attending Maggie’s for emotional care for cancer.

“We see more than 13,000 visits every year from people who come to us for emotional care alongside their NHS treatment.”

Over the years there have been several sculpture trails across Scotland raising money for different charities.

Charlie Langhorne is from Wild in Art which has organised the past events.

He said: “It’s about that shared experience – and we’re living in some pretty tough times and it’s a free public activity so there’s no barrier to entry.

“As you walk round the corner and you bump into one of our giraffes in Edinburgh – or one of the Maggie’s Penguins from Dundee…it just makes you smile and on the back of that smile great things happen.”

Local businesses are hopeful the trail will encourage more people to explore Fife after the busy summer season.

Louise Fraser from BID St Andrews said: “It’s really about boosting the economy, bringing in visitors and just giving people another dimension to St Andrews.

“We’re known for lots of things all over the world – but what we probably do best is a really warm welcome.”
