Highland Cow stars in cardigan campaign to tempt winter tourists

Julie was talent-spotted by VisitScotland for her patient nature and ability to stand quietly while being buttoned into bespoke outfits for photo shoots.

A Highland Cow has proved she’s outstanding in her field by being signed-up as Scotland’s latest super moo-del.

Nine-year-old Julie is the “face” of a new campaign encouraging tourists to visit Scotland during winter.

And she’s been dressing the part – wearing a hand-knitted cardigan and bunnet to showcase some cow couture.

Julie was talent-spotted by VisitScotland for her patient nature, which allows her to stand quietly while being buttoned into her bespoke outfit for photo shoots.

She’s used to being handled as her owner, Louise Nicoll, runs Highland Cow experiences at Newton Farm Holidays and Tours near Forfar.

“We always knew she was a super model anyway, so it’s not changed much for us in that respect,” said Louise.

“It is lovely being able to be part of a campaign to promote visitors coming to Scotland in the winter and Julie loves this, this is her thing, this is what she loves, so it’s great to be able to showcase that and showcase her and how lovely our cows are.”

The Coos in Cardis campaign comes just over a decade after VisitScotland recruited Shetland ponies to wear knitted sweaters to promote Scotland’s natural beauty.

Julie’s made-to-measure cardigan and bunnet was created by a team of five knitters from The Airts Community Centre in Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway.

Caroline Warburton, VisitScotland’s destination development director said: “Highland Cows are synonymous with Scotland so what better to choose for our winter campaign than such an iconic animal, and how better to make sure you don’t feel the cold than by wrapping up in a cardigan.

“Scotland is a great place to visit at any time of the year, but we’re keen that people don’t just think of it as a summer holiday destination.

“The new campaign is going well on social media and it’s a good fun thing.

“We hope lots of people will respond to it and share the images and we can send Julie and the Highland Cows in cardigans all around the world.”
