Historic family jewellers celebrate 100 years of trade in Aberdeen

Jamieson and Carry on Union Street has been run by four generations of the same family in the heart of the city since 1925.

An award-winning Aberdeen jewellery shop is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Jamieson and Carry on Union Street has been run by four generations of the same family in the heart of the city since 1925.

The award-winning company’s connection to Aberdeen dates as far back as 1733.

Previous manager Michael Carry told STV News: “I remember coming into the shop in my shorts! It was very powerful in those days to walk into a shop like this with the big glass cases and silver and jewellery.

“You were just in wonder of everything, and it really inspired me to have a career in the jewellery business.”

The first member of the family involved was William Whyte Carry, who apprenticed to “George Jamieson and Son” in 1881.

William George Jamieson passed away in 1899, and the business was sold to William Carry in 1907.

The Carry family have been sole owners ever since.

Today, the business is run by Michael’s two sons, Christopher and Philip.

“It feels wonderful. It’s been good fun and hopefully we have many more years to come,” said Christopher.

“We are just trying to look after the Aberdeen public and make sure they have an enjoyable experience and we have the right product and the right environment.

“As we mark 100 years of the opening on Union Street, we are reflecting on a century of love and legacy.

“From engagements and weddings to finding the perfect gift to celebrate life’s milestones, we’ve been with our valued customers every step of the way and want to take this time to share our thanks.

“Without our loyal customers, the business would not have stood the test of time.”

Philip added: “It’s a great honour to be part of a family business on the same location for 100 years, and we are looking forward to celebrating with some good events.”

The company’s centenary comes at a challenging time when high streets across the country are struggling.

The shop has recently undergone a multi-million-pound expansion, which the jeweller says is proof that Aberdeen city centre is a good place to do business

Michael said: “It’s just investment, investment, investment all the time in the business, and the result has been fantastic. We are very, very proud and pleased to be in Union Street.

Christopher said: “Every city is going through a transition, and Aberdeen is not unique, but the city is resilient to ride it through.

“In three or four years, we will blink an eye and be in a healthy place.”
