A horse that was injured after being hit by a firework is on the “road to recovery” after successful surgery.

Dettori lost an eye as a result of the incident that took place in a field near Counteswells, Aberdeen, on Bonfire Night.

The animal was left in “excruciating pain” after being struck by part of the lit device.

The rocket caused “irreversible damage” after it “pushed his eye so far into the socket that all the fluid has come out and filled with blood”.

But after surgery, described as a great success with no complications, Dettori will be back home on Thursday.

And his owner also revealed that he has been spoiled with treats and gifts from local businesses as a GoFundMe page closes in on £14,000.

She told Fubar News: “Thankfully we have received the best news, Dettori was a superstar and his surgery was a great success with no complications; we are beyond relieved and our boy is on the road to recovery.

“Dettori will be home tomorrow and we cannot wait to give him all the treats he can eat (we can all agree he deserves nothing but the best). Both me and mum want to say thank you so much to everyone who messaged us with words of encouragement, shared Dettori’s story or donated to our go fund me page.

“The support we have received has been humbling and a great reassurance that there is kind and caring people out there. the police have recently informed us that the man who set of the firework display cannot be charged.

“However, we are focusing on the positives and despite this unnecessary and horrendous ordeal Dettori will survive and that is the main thing to us.

“Dettori has had many small business donating him lovely treats so thank you playboy nom nom treats for his handmade hamper, Fiona Rose for booking him in for a massage in December and Patsy Thornton for offering us free livery for Dettori’s recovery period.

“We will be forever grateful”.
