A major Aberdeen bridge will be closed for almost two weeks due to essential road works.

Council bosses have announced that the Bridge of Dee will be closed to traffic in both directions from September 27.

It will be closed for 12 days, until October 9, to allow the “re-surfacing and bridge works” to take place.

Motorists and pedestrians have been advised by the city council to find alternative routes to cross the River Dee.

One local took to social media on Tuesday morning, warning fellow commuters of “huge queues” along Holburn Street and Riverside Drive heading towards Duthie Park.

Built in 1527 to replace a ferry boat over the Dee, the bridge has been the primary link between Aberdeen and the south for nearly 500 years.

It was designated a Category A-listed structure in 1967, and was also listed as a scheduled monument until being de-scheduled in February 2009.

Alternative routes include the King George VI Bridge, the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and Victoria Bridge, while the Wellington Suspension Bridge is another option for pedestrians hoping to cross.
