A section of the M90 has been closed on Tuesday morning due to a nearby recycling centre fire.
Emergency services were called to Perth’s Lower Friarton Road following reports of a fire within a recycling centre at around 3.00am.
Due to the amount of smoke, police officers have closed off the Friarton Bridge, which passes over the River Tay, in both directions.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has urged nearby residents to ensure their windows and doors are closed.
A post on the service’s social media read: “We are in attendance at a fire within a recycling centre on Lower Friarton Road, Perth.
“Due to large volumes of smoke we are asking people to avoid the area and close windows and doors in nearby homes.
“The Friarton Bridge on the M90 is also closed. Thank you for your support.”
A Perth and Kinross council spokesperson said: “The Friarton Bridge is currently closed to traffic because of a fire in premises on Lower Friarton Road.
“Traffic will be diverted through Perth.
“Scottish Fire and Rescue is advising people living nearby keep their windows closed due to the volume of smoke.”
The Friarton Industrial Estate near Perth has faced a number of blazes over the years.
In May 2024 fire crews were dispatched to a council run depot after an industrial unit burst into flames. The local authority later confirmed the large-fire was caused by a vape combusting when being crushed.
The devices – which contain lithium batteries – can overheat if not recycled correctly.
In February 2023, emergency services were called to the nearby Shore Recycling Centre following an early morning explosion and fire.
A 46-year-old dad, Slawomir Szmeichel, died during the incident and a 41-year-old man was taken to hospital.
A year prior to the fatal incident fire crews were called to the electrical waste recycling plant after flames took hold of the site.
