A man has been charged in connection with a disturbance following an anti-immigration protest in Dundee.

A group, which calls itself Dundee Patriots, has been holding demonstrations at the city’s Reid Square and outside the former Craigtay Hotel on Broughty Ferry Road.

Officers have charged a 28-year-old man in connection with an incident which took place outside the premises on December 29.

He was released on an undertaking to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court at a later date.

Chief Inspector Colin Echevarria said: “Police Scotland is a rights-based organisation and our role is to ensure public safety while balancing the rights of protesters who wish to peacefully demonstrate.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our communities.”

Dundee Patriots claim the former hotel is housing asylum seekers, however, the building is made up of 25 studio rooms, which can be booked for a minimum of 30 days.

The Home Office confirmed that there are no asylum seekers housed at the hotel on Broughty Ferry Road.

Several private contractors, including Mears Group, Serco and Clearsprings Ready Homes, were tasked with procuring and managing asylum accommodation.

Access Accommodation, the company who operates the Craigtay Hotel site, has not been contracted to house asylum seekers.
