Officers said they were aware of speculation and misinformation surrounding the incident published on online accounts from figures including Tommy Robinson, James English and Elon Musk.

The First Minister also waded into the row, saying Musk was trying to “undermine” the social “cohesion” in Scottish communities by spreading “deliberate disinformation”, which he said was “totally and utterly unacceptable”.

On Thursday, police confirmed that following “extensive enquiries”, a man and woman had been charged in connection with the incident.

No other details about the pair have been released.
