A man has been charged in connection to an incident of child neglect at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Dundee as police confirm four arrests over the three-day festival.
The music event, which took place in Camperdown Park between May 26 and 28, saw acts including The 1975, Jonas Brothers, Wet Leg and Niall Horan perform to crowds of around 80,000.
The event has been praised for bringing an economic and cultural boost to Dundee and local residents have been thanked for their “patience and understanding” throughout the weekend.
However, police also confirmed a total of four people, three men aged 28, 29 and 30 and one 23-year-old woman, were arrested throughout the course of the weekend.
A 29-year-old man was charged with assault on Friday and is due to appear in court.
On Saturday, a 30-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection to child neglect.
A 23-year-old woman was also arrested on the same day for breach of the peace.
Reports for both incidents have been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
On Sunday, a 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection to an assault.
He is also due to appear before Dundee Sheriff Court at a later date.
No further details of the incidents have been released at this time.
Officers from Dundee Police Division were in attendance at the festival all weekend.
Following the event, Dundee City Council leader Councillor John Alexander praised the city and those who attended.
He said: “This was an absolutely fantastic experience for everyone who attended and Dundee really put on a show to remember over three days.
“BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend has showcased Dundee’s ‘can-do’ attitude, as the council and partners worked with the BBC deliver a massive occasion on our doorstep.
“It helped to shine a spotlight on Dundee that has seen us reach the homes of millions of people across Britain through high-profile broadcast coverage.”
Thousands also travelled to the city from across the UK with a number of diversions and disruptions in place across the city.
Cllr Alexander continued: “We put on a huge effort to ensure that fans were able to get to and from Camperdown Park safely.
“There were many people who also volunteered to support the efforts we mobilised to ensure that the weekend worked successfully.
“With an event of this size, it was inevitable that there would be disruption and we had to put certain measures such as road closures in place to ensure safety. I would like to thank local residents and people across the city for their patience and understanding over the weekend when there were restrictions.
“BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend represents a unique opportunity for Dundee and an economic boost for the area, as the event has been worth millions of pounds to previous host locations.”
Paul Bush OBE, director of events at VisitScotland, said: “We were delighted to support Dundee City Council host the eagerly anticipated Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
“Congratulations to all the incredible teams involved in making the weekend a great success, and indeed the audiences who welcomed an array of top-talent across the weekend.
“As well as attracting tens of thousands of people to the event itself, the wider amplification which has been shared across broadcast and digital channels both pre, during and post event, has played a key part in reinforcing Scotland as a world-leading events destination.”
