Man dead and another in hospital after explosion causes fire at recycling centre near M90

A man has died as crews continue to tackle a fire after an explosion at an industrial recycling centre in Perth.

Emergency services were called to Shore Recycling Ltd at Friarton Bridge Park shortly before 12.39am on Tuesday, and remain in attendance alongside police and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Six appliances plus specialist resources remain at the scene, where crews are tackling a fire involving approximately 200 tonnes of scrap material.

The body of a 46-year-old man was found. Formal identification has yet to take place but his next of kin are aware, police said.

Another man, aged 41, was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital with serious injuries.

The M90 at Friarton Bridge remains closed, and members of the public have been urged to avoid the area.

Chief inspector Tom Leonard, area commander for Perth and Kinross, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has died at what is a very difficult time for them.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of what has happened and officers are conducting a joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“I would like to thank members of the public, particularly road users, for their patience while our colleagues in the Scottish Fire and Rescue service work to put out the fire.

“Officers are continuing to liaise with other emergency services and partners while enquiries are carried out.”

A fire engulfed the electrical waste recycling plant in September last year. Crews were called to Shore Recycling at around 4.30am on Sunday, September 4.
