A man has been taken to hospital after a campervan exploded while in a car park in Moray.

Emergency services were called to Church Street in Lossiemouth around 7.30am on Monday following a possible gas explosion within the vehicle.

Images from the scene showed the door of the vehicle blown off by the blast.

A 59-year-old man was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin before being transported to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by road.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances, and there is no risk to the wider public, officers said.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a possible gas explosion within a motorhome in a car park in the Church Street area of Lossiemouth around 7.30am on Monday.

“A 59-year-old man was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin and later transferred by road to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and there is no risk to the wider public.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.30am on Monday, July 14 to reports of an explosion within a campervan in a car park near Church Street, Lossiemouth.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters assisted emergency service partners.

“One casualty was handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.26am today to attend an incident on Gregory Place in Lossiemouth.

“We dispatched one ambulance and our trauma team to the scene. We transported one male patient to Dr Gray’s Hospital.”

Lossiemouth Community Council said on Facebook: “We are aware that the emergency services were called to a campervan at Gregory Place this morning following an explosion.

“We understand a gentleman has been taken to hospital.

“Thank you to the members of the public who attended the scene and to our emergency services.

“Sending our very best wishes for a full recovery to the occupant and anyone else involved in the incident.”
