Man to stand trial accused of murdering three-month-old son at home in Glenrothes

A man is to stand trial charged with the murder of his baby son.

Ryan Lumsden, 28, is accused of killing Elijah Edwin Lumsden in late July 2025 at a property in Glenrothes, Fife.

Elijah is said to have been just under three months old at the time.

Prosecutors claim Lumsden did shake the child or otherwise cause injury to his head and body by means unknown.

It is further alleged that he then failed to seek urgent medical help for his son, leaving him so severely hurt that he passed away at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy on July 27, 2025.

Lumsden, of Glenrothes, is separately charged with repeatedly behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards a woman.

This is said to have occurred between August 2024 and July 2025 in West Lothian.

Among the claims are that Lumsden shouted at the woman, failed to control his temper, criticised her and attempted to keep tabs on her movements.

It is further claimed he threw around household items, punched walls, slammed doors, checked her phone and persistently messaged her.

Lumsden also allegedly behaved in a “aggressive and intimidating manner” in the presence of others.

A hearing took place at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday.

John Scullion KC, defending, said: “He pleads not guilty.

“If contrary information is to come to light when it comes to the injuries, it won’t take the Crown by surprise if there is a special defence lodged of incrimination.”

Prosecutor Erin Campbell agreed that a trial could be set for August next year.

Lord Scott fixed a trial which is due to last seven days at the High Court in Glasgow.

Lumsden remains on bail meantime.
