The power of ballet is helping people with Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis (MS) to stay active.

Free classes have launched in Webster Memorial Theatre in Arbroath, led by Scottish Ballet’s Dance Health Programme – the first time it has been delivered in a community setting in Angus.

Working with culture, sport and leisure trust ANGUSalive, people living with these conditions are being invited to take part in gentle, adaptable dance sessions led by experienced dance specialists from the national ballet company.

Parkinson’s and MS are neurodegenerative conditions that affect the central nervous system, often causing similar symptoms like tremor, weakness, and walking difficulties.

Participants at the first Parkinson’s-specific workshop on Tuesday say they enjoyed trying out ballet for the first time.

Gerry told STV News: “I wasn’t following all the moves all the time; I can either do the top half or the bottom half – I got a bit confused, but I’ll give it another try. I think exercise helps me.”

Margaret said: “It was really enjoyable – it’s really good to get stretched out. I’ll definitely be back.

“It helps my condition a lot and makes a huge difference. It’s great to meet other people in the same position as you – sometimes you can feel left out of groups if you’re the only person there with Parkinson’s.”

Maureen added: “I loved dancing when I was younger and going out – I miss it because I can’t stand. Classes like this get you motivated.”

Kirstie Abbey, Health & Wellbeing Lead at ANGUSalive: “There’s so much evidence around the benefits of movement. It helps manage conditions like Parkinson’s and MS.

“It’s just about bringing something a bit more fun that you enjoy, coming together with people and bringing that into a local context as opposed to travelling to Dundee or Aberdeen. We’re really lucky to have this.

“We have supported thousands of local people with our gentle activities, and we hope to help even more with this exciting initiative.”

Part of Scottish Ballet’s Dance Health programmes, the sessions use movement to help improve balance, coordination and mobility.

Alongside the physical benefits, the classes provide a relaxed and welcoming space for people to connect with others who share similar experiences.

Ballet classes tailored for people with MS will begin in April.

Health & Wellbeing Lead at ANGUSalive, Danielle Tyrer, said: “We use a lot of imagery in class along with live rhythmic music and dancing. People moving and being together is a social element – it’s about being part of something.

“It can really help people with rhythms. Posture balance and coordination. People can come, have a tea and a biscuit. Enjoy moving your body and listening to music.”

Tiffany Stott, Scottish Ballet Dance health manager added: “We’re very proud to be extending these sessions into Angus. Dance can be such a powerful tool for supporting both physical and emotional well-being.

“In our experience, we have seen first-hand the impact of how it can help people feel more confident in their bodies as they self-manage conditions such as Parkinson’s and MS, and we can’t wait to help those in Angus.”

The Scottish Ballet’s Dance Health Programme will run in Angus for 12 months, with workshops for people with MS beginning in April.
