New designs have been released showing what a notorious junction on the A90 road could look like if given the go-ahead.
The Toll of Birness has become a “black spot” and the site of several collisions, some of which have resulted in fatalities.
For years, north east MPs and MSPs have called for changes to the fork junction’s layout to help reduce the number of incidents.
Now, a consultation has been launched by Aberdeenshire Council looking at a roundabout design.
The aim is to improve safety and efficiency through the junction, and strengthen links between Peterhead and Fraserburgh.
Aberdeenshire CouncilWorking in collaboration with Nestrans and Transport Scotland, the council has now released images of what the new Toll of Birness could look like once transformed.
The images show a three-branched roundabout, two connecting the A90 road to the north and south and the third connecting the A952.
Alan Turner, chair of the council’s Infrastructure Services committee and vice-chair of Nestrans, said: “Toll of Birness is a busy junction on a key route and it is vital that we continue to look at how we can improve safety for all road users.
“Incidents around this location have at times been serious and this reinforces why we are bringing forward these proposals.”
The project will be funded through the Aberdeen City Region Deal, a consortium of national and local governments, along with private sector partner Opportunity North East.
A public drop-in exhibition will take place at Hatton Public Hall on Wednesday, September 2, from 2pm to 7pm.
