New uniform code at Dunfermline's Queen Anne High School allows pupils to swap shirts and ties for t-shirts and hoodies

Young people at Queen Anne High School in Dunfermline will be given “greater choice” over their clothing with an update to the school’s dress code.

The new dress code will allow students to don hoodies and t-shirts instead of a traditional shirt and tie every day.

The school invited feedback from families, students and staff prior to making the decision, in hopes of reducing barriers to attendance and supporting a more “inclusive ethos”.

Pupils will be provided hoodies embellished with school badges designed by fellow students, which can be worn over their shirt and tie.

Alternatively, they will also be allowed to ditch the shirt and tie in favour of a plain black, white, or grey t-shirt to be worn under the hoodie.

Queen Anne High School’s headteacher Ruth McFarlane explained that the school’s new hoodie gives young people more choice over how they want to dress each day modelling the real world of employability.

The main elements of the previous school dress code still remain in place.

She said: “We consulted with our young people and their parents on the idea of introducing a hoodie to the school dress code and the idea was really welcomed”.

“Pupils now have more flexibility on how they want to dress for their day – either a shirt and tie or their hoodie. It will be interesting to see which proves most popular!”
