Nine people have fallen unwell after an incident involving “potentially hazardous materials” in Angus.

Police, firefighters in hazmat suits, and ambulance crews were sent to the scene on Meridan Street in Montrose after the alarm was raised around 10.20am.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched three fire engines to the scene, and the Scottish Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance, a resuscitation rapid response unit (3RU), and four specialist operations response teams.

Nine casualties were treated on scene but were not transferred to hospital.

Roads surrounding the docks have been closed.

Police said there was no risk to the wider public.

A spokesperson for Montrose Port said: “At approximately 10am today, we were informed of an incident on the North Quayside involving one of our tenants.

“Emergency services are managing the situation on-site and we are fully cooperating with them to ensure a swift and safe resolution.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10:07am on Wednesday, November 6, to an incident involving potentially hazardous materials in a building on Meridan Street, Montrose.

“At its height, Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and specialist HAZMAT resources to the scene.

“Nine casualties were handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and did not require hospital treatment.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 9.56am to attend an incident on Meridian Street, Montrose.

“An ambulance, a resuscitation rapid response unit (3RU) and four specialist operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched, and nine patients were treated on scene.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.20am on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, we were called to attend a premises in the Meridan Street area of Montrose following a report of a number of people becoming unwell.

“Emergency services are currently in attendance dealing with the incident, however there is no risk to the wider public.”
