Around 100 jobs are at risk after a North Sea energy firm announced plans to close its Scottish HQ.

Spirit Energy employs around 150 people at its office in Aberdeen.

The company said it is restructuring its business with 50 staff to be moved to a smaller office in the city.

In a statement, Spirit Energy said it is supporting a carbon storage project in Morecambe, Lancashire, and a development in Barrow, Cumbria, managing fields in the East Irish Sea.

A consultation process with staff is under way with redundancies and the closure of the current office expected later this year.

A Spirit Energy spokesman said: “We are committed to supporting all our colleagues throughout the consultation process.”

Gordon and Buchan MP Harriet Cross, who raised the job losses in Westminster on Wednesday, said: “Spirit Energy’s announcement is yet another devastating blow in an endless list for Aberdeen’s oil and gas industry.”
