Old sports centre can be bulldozed after court clears path

Scotland’s highest court has ruled that Angus Council can bulldoze a disused sports centre after a year-long legal battle.

Two local businessmen took the local authority to the Court of Session over plans to demolish Lochside Leisure Centre in Forfar.

Housing developer Mark Guild and hotelier Donald Stewart wanted to save the facility for community use, but the court ruled against them.

Mr Guild said he was disappointed and was considering appealing the decision.

“The decision today seems to be based on a legal argument and I don’t think the demolition of Lochside Leisure Centre is the right thing to do,” he said.

“I would again ask Angus Council to consult the public on the future of Lochside Leisure Centre.”

Angus Council has long said the building was sinking but independent engineers believe it is fit for purpose, with one expert predicting it could be used for another 40 years.

The council, which previously refused a £30,000 offer to buy the building, said the demolition would cost £50,000.

In a statement, council leader David Fairweather said: “I’m delighted with the decision reached today by Lady Carmichael on the Lochside judicial review.

“We have only had a short time to review the judgement but it’s clear she has found on the council in every respect. The findings clearly show the council has acted in a proper manner. “
