An investigation is under way after a cat had to be put to sleep after getting stuck in an illegal trap.

The animal was found in woodland near MacDuff, Aberdeenshire, on January 28.

The domestic cat had to be put to sleep due to the extent of its injuries.

In March 2024, the Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Bill was passed in the Scottish Parliament, banning the use of snares and glue traps for animal capture.

The SSPCA said it would investigate the incident and has appealed for members of the public to come forward with information.

A special investigations inspector said: “These illegal traps are indiscriminate and will cause unnecessary suffering to any animal caught in them.

“We are asking the public to get in touch if they have any information surrounding the circumstances of this cat or trap by calling our animal helpline on 03000 999 999.”
