Plans for a 50MW battery storage plant near House of Dun in Angus have been recommended for approval by planning chiefs despite a raft of objections.

The bid, lodged by Renewable Energy System, hopes to see the creation of an 8,250 sqm compound within a 3.7-hectare field.

This, developers say, will house 32 metal battery storage containers.

The proposed site sits beside the A935 Montrose to Brechin road close to the House of Dun, a stately home which dates back to the 18th century.

The application will go before councillors at a development standards committee meeting on Tuesday.

Objections

A total of 11 objections were submitted against the application. A further nine representations were lodged in support.

Among those opposing the plan is the Hillside, Dun and Logie Pert Community Council, who raised concerns over public safety and the potential impact the project will have on the local area.

The community council said: “This development will have a detrimental effect on the local community, causing initial and ongoing disruption to residents.

“It does so as a commercial venture, repurposing agricultural land without adding to the local economy or bringing any advantage to the local community.

“No jobs will be created and no investment is proposed in local infrastructure or the community in general.”

Despite the objections, planning chiefs have determined the bid would not have any negative impact on the area.

In the committee report, they wrote: “The proposed development would provide a source of renewable energy generation in a manner that would not give rise to unacceptable impacts on infrastructure, amenity, built and natural heritage interests (including landscape), or other environmental interests subject to appropriate mitigation.

“There are no material considerations that justify refusal of planning permission.”
