Plans to redevelop the former Rockwell High School in Dundee into housing have been revealed.

Developer Simco Inveraldie Ltd has lodged a planning application seeking permission to partly demolish the school building on Lawton Road to create 28 flats.

The developer is also looking to build 12 semi-detached and seven terraced houses on the site. Two detached houses are also planned.

The former Rockwell High School buidling is category B-listed.

Under the plans, the building’s main entrance and stairwell will be retained.

The remainder of the school to the east, including the dining and assembly hall, will be removed.

School closed back in 1997

The school was opened back April 1930, and served the community for 67 years before the gates closed in June 1997.

It has since been used as temporary accommodation for other city schools.

However, the building has gradually fallen into disrepair and has become a target for vandals.

Dundee City Council deemed that the building no longer fit for purpose and was subsequently made marketed for sale in 2020.

Documents submitted with the planning application say there will be no impact on the Rockwell Learning Centre, which is located in a retained area of the school and outside the development boundaries.

The local authority will consider the plans in the coming weeks.
