Public urged to avoid toxic water at Loch Earn

Members of the public are being urged to avoid the toxic water at Loch Earn.

Perth and Kinross Council has warned of algal blooms, particularly at the St Fillan’s end.

The council issued an alert following confirmed reports of blue-green algae blooms recorded on Loch Earn.

A council spokesperson said: “Please avoid the water while blooms are ongoing and keep pets and children away from the area.”

Blue-green aglae are a type of bacteria, known as cyanobacteria, which can produce toxic chemicals and pose health risks to both humans and animals.

The toxic bloom can cause skin rashes, eye irritations, sickness and diarrhoea, fever and muscle/joint pain.

Perth and Kinross Council has asked for any concerns about blue-green algae to be reported via the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology website.
