A red squirrel has been rescued and freed after becoming trapped inside a Greggs in Perthshire.
The bakery in the town of Pitlochry has been shut since the animal was discovered on the roof of the premises on Saturday and a Scottish SPCA rescue team was called in.
A spokesperson for Greggs confirmed that the squirrel had been found and released “after giving us the run around for a few days”.
“We thank him for his rather enthusiastic first shift which turned out to be quite the adventure”, a spokeswoman said.
“After giving us the run around for a few days, we’ve managed to catch the Greggs squirrel safely and can confirm he’s now back in his natural habitat.”
The shop also confirmed it will remain closed until the premises thoroughly cleaned.
“The Pitlochry shop is now closed for a deep clean and will reopen later this week, squirrel free”, the spokesperson added.
Red squirrels are Scotland’s native species and have lived in the UK for around 10,000 years.
There are estimated to be only 160,000 red squirrels remaining in the UK, 75% of which are in Scotland.
Without concerted and effective action to protect them, the red squirrels that remain in Scotland could disappear within our lifetime, according to the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
