Schoolchildren win business award named after Aberdeenshire student who died of brain cancer

An award named after a student who died from brain cancer has been handed out to schoolchildren in Aberdeen.

The Jordan Kearney Award was presented at the Young Enterprise awards, hosted at the Leonardo Hotel, to two youngsters who were selected from schools across Aberdeenshire.

Business student Jordan died with his family by his side in December after being diagnosed with an inoperable form of brain cancer.

The 22-year-old was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after a 4cm mass was discovered in June 2022, before he was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme – which was deemed inoperable due to its location.

Presented to Tejash Bhattari from St Machar Academy and Eve Murray from Westhill Academy, the Jordan Kearney award was presented to students who “showed extraordinary commitment to the their team, behaved like a role model and demonstrated confidence and respect for others”.

The award was created in recognition to the late Peterhead Academy student, who was a former participant in young enterprise activities and left a “huge impact” on his local community.

Chairman of Young Enterprise Grampian, Ian Phillips, commented: “The Young Enterprise Grampian programme has really captured the imagination of young people in our area and with the support of the wider YEG organisation I hope their experiences of delivering on some very diverse business ideas will have inspired them to become entrepreneurs of the future.

“This year we are also proud that we can also remember the positive impact that Jordan Kearney had in Young Enterprise and to recognise this in what will be an annual award”.
