GoFundMe via SuppliedA Scottish man has had both his legs amputated after being involved in a “hit and run“ with a lorry in Thailand.
Willie Braid was riding his motorbike when he was involved in the “catastrophic” crash in Bangkok on Sunday, July 27.
The 54-year-old, from Angus, was taken to hospital while the driver of the other vehicle involved allegedly fled the scene.
His sister, June, flew to Thailand to be by his bedside. She was told by nurses upon her arrival that her brother wouldn’t “survive the night”.
“The initial shock of hearing about it was big enough”, she told STV News. “But seeing the injuries up close was devastating.
“We heard he was going to be amputated but didn’t realise it would be above the knee. It was shocking.
“The nurse initially said that he would not survive the first night of the accident.
“They are shocked at how strong he is.”

Due to the severity of his injuries, Willie was placed in an induced coma.
After suffering kidney failure, both his legs were amputated below the knee.
June confirmed that he has since woken up, but doesn’t know where he is or anything about the accident.
“He has no idea he’s in hospital or what has happened”, she added. “He doesn’t know yet that his legs have been amputated.
“I don’t know how anybody deals with that. He’s going to need 24/7 care.
“He’s been in Thailand for five years, but just moved to Bangkok last month. So it’s just so unfortunate.
“We are praying for the best, and hoping every day to see some improvements.”
More than £4,000 has been raised since a collection to help pay for his rehabilitation and medical bills was launched by June.
The UK Foreign Office and authorities in Thailand have been contacted for comment.
