Over 300 people took part in what could be Scotland’s ‘biggest snowball fight’ after a local couple put out a call on social media.
Locals of all ages flocked to Strathburn Park in Inverurie on Tuesday evening to make the most of heavy snowfall.
Over 300 people are thought to have attended with a local sports centre doing their bit to make the event a success.
Garioch Sports Centre, adjacent to the park, turned on the floodlights and gave the locals a generator to use as hundreds of people gathered.
Roxana Miskelly from Inverurie said she ‘half jokingly’ told her husband Scott on Monday evening that they should post on a community Facebook group to organise a snowball fight.
Hours after her husband shared the post, around 100 had joined with members of the community getting involved in spreading the word.
The first snowball fight on Monday night received such a reaction that Roxana and her family, with the help of local comedian Wray Thomson, decided to promote another meet-up the following day.
She said: “The Garioch Rugby Club put on their floodlights for us and we all had a great time.
“Then after being inundated with messages, we decided to go again on the Tuesday night and aim for the title of Scotland’s Biggest Snowball fight since I couldn’t find any record of one online to date.
“Wray got lots of social media pages and radio stations involved to get the word out that we were planning this at the Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie, he took his PA system so we had music and Wray was the compere, and the GSC gave us a generator for power and their flood lights.
“We could suddenly see all these people swarming into the middle of the park, I couldn’t believe people actually came and it was just brilliant – we think around 300 people attended and it was just great, old-fashioned fun.
“We had people in their 70s there, dogs running everywhere, people dancing, tiny kids getting involved, parents laughing and playing with their kids in the snow, it was just fab.
“There were a group of teenagers who often get a bit of a bad reputation around Inverurie, they came to both nights armed with a box of pre-made snowballs and spent time playing with all the little kids too – it turned out to be a real heart-warming community event, we just can’t believe how quickly it all escalated.”
While the official record for the biggest snowball fight in Scotland is unknown, the woman claims the event will take place again next year.
She added: “Our idea has seemingly now started an epidemic of snowball fights breaking out all over the country, so we may not keep the title of Scotland’s biggest snowball fight for long but without a doubt we’ll be back at it next year, bigger and better!”
