Scots residents report ‘light shaking’ after 3.3 magnitude earthquake in Perth and KinrossiStock

People in homes across Scotland were woken up by light shaking in their homes after a 3.3 magnitude earthquake hit during the early hours on Monday.

According to the British Geological Survey, the shaking began at 7.25am with the epicentre of the quake recorded at a depth of 3km near Loch Lyon in the Perth and Kinross region.

The Volcano Discovery website, which compiles data of geological events across the world, says people living almost 50 miles away reported a very weak shaking in their homes.

Residents reportedly heard a “low rumbling sound” with some thinking “there had been an explosion”. Others stated that their home started to shake and the doors “rattled”.

An earthquake measuring 3.3 magnitude is considered a minor seismic event, which can be felt but rarely causes any damage.

Between 200 and 300 quakes occur in the UK each year, however, only 20 to 30 of those are strong enough to be felt by people.
