Security guard killed in Asda supermarket incident was beloved 'husband and bampy'

The family of a security guard who died in an incident at an Asda supermarket has said he “will be missed by everyone who knew him”.

Alun Harris-Richards was pronounced dead by emergency services after being found unresponsive in Arbroath’s Asda at Westway Retail Park on Sunday.

The 61-year-old’s family have described him as a “much-loved husband, father, and bampy”.

Bampy is a Welsh word for grandad.

In a statement shared through Police Scotland, they said: “Alun will be missed by all his family and everyone who knew him.

“Thank you to the emergency services and all those who assisted. We would like to ask for privacy at what is a very difficult time as we come to terms with our sudden loss.”

A 37-year-old woman has been charged with killing Mr Harris-Richards.

Natasha Smith appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court on Tuesday where she was charged with theft by shoplifting, two counts of assaulting, threatening or abusing retail staff, and culpable homicide.

Smith, of Arbroath, made no plea and was remanded in custody. She is due to appear before court again within the next eight days.

Asda’s chief people and corporate affairs officer, Hayley Tatum, said: “We are truly saddened by the death of one of our colleagues, Alun Harris-Richards. Our deepest condolences are with his friends and family at this difficult time.

“We are providing support to colleagues at our Arbroath store and would like to thank customers for their understanding during this difficult time.”
