SPFL charity opening community hubs to help tackle fuel poverty

The SPFL Trust’s new initiative will build ten community hubs across the country to provide warm spaces and hot meals to those in need.

A charity which works with Scotland’s professional football clubs is helping to tackle fuel poverty this winter.

The SPFL Trust’s new initiative, Game Energy, will build ten community hubs across the country to provide warm spaces and hot meals to those in need.

The programme, delivered in partnership with Scottish Gas Network (SGN), will also provide support for people in fuel poverty at almost all SPFL-associated community trusts and clubs.

Figures show a third (31%) of Scottish households currently live in fuel poverty, while 20% live in extreme fuel poverty.

SPFL Trust CEO Nicky Reid said: “We are thrilled to be working with SGN to deliver Game Energy.

“People all around the country are struggling with fuel poverty, so we know their input will make a real impact in supporting people financially, but also with their overall wellbeing.”

Margaret Hamilton, Community Partnership manager at SGN, added: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the SPFL Trust to provide essential energy support and safeguarding services to households across Scotland.

“This unique partnership will support households ahead of winter to use energy safely, efficiently and affordably while building a network of community hubs to provide further services to help address fuel poverty and the challenges households face.”

Game Energy has been modelled on a successful initiative launched by Aberdeen FC Community Trust in 2022 in the wake of the energy crisis.

The Pittodrie Community Hub has been operating since the energy crisis in 2022, with around 50 people attending each week.

As well as getting a warm space and hot food, users are able to access vital services on offer to them in a destigmatised environment.

Liz Bowie, Aberdeen FC Community Trust CEO said: “Initially when it was set up it was intended as a warm space, place to get a nice hot meal and to find company in what was quite a difficult winter.

“But we quickly realised that there was a place for other charities and organisations to get involved so that the people who were coming along could have a one-stop-shop and get help and guidance.”
