Stoneywood Parkvale player collapses on pitch after suffering heart attack in pre-season friendly on Aberdeen pitch

An amateur footballer collapsed on the pitch after suffering a heart attack during a pre-season game in Aberdeen on Monday night.

The incident took place at Arjowiggins Park as Stoneywood Parkvale amateurs played its junior side in an annual match up between the two.

However the game was abandoned when James Kirkwood, known as Kirky, collapsed just as the game restarted after half-time.

CPR was administered before emergency serviced arrived as used a defibrillator to help regain his consciousness before taking him to hospital.

Pictures from the scene posted online show two ambulances on the pitch as medical staff surround the player who is lying on the pitch.

In a statement released on Facebook Stoneywood Parkvale said: “On Tuesday at ArjoWiggins Stoneywood Park our junior and amateur football teams contested in the annual pre season friendly.

“Unfortunately the game had to be abandoned just prior to half-time as amateur player James Kirkwood (Kirky) collapsed after suffering a heart attack.

“CPR was quickly administered by both clubs until the emergency services arrived with a defibrillator, Kirky soon gained conciseness and was then quickly taken to hospital where he is making good progress.

“A massive thank you to both clubs in acting so swift and of course the emergency services.
We all wish Kirky a speedy recovery.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 19.52hrs on 25^th July to attend an incident at Market Street, Bucksburn, Aberdeen.

“We dispatched a number of resources to the scene, including a resuscitation rapid response unit and an ambulance, and the patient was transported to hospital.”
