Dozens of students at North East Scotland College (NESCol) will have to retake part of their coursework after malpractice was discovered in the awarding qualifications.

The college confirmed that errors in relation to the award of qualifications and certifications to 50 students were identified in an audit.

An audit was ordered due to issues with coursework completed by students within the advanced engineering team at the Aberdeen Altens Campus during the 2023/24 session.

Following the audit, NESCol said malpractice in relation to key elements of the management of these processes had been identified among a limited number of staff.

The college added it was supporting students on a one-to-one-basis to ensure recovery plans were put in place to allow “remedial work” to be carried out to satisfy the requirements for qualifications “at the earliest opportunity”.

A spokesperson for NESCol apologised for the disruption and impact on the affected students.

“NESCol is committed to rectifying these errors and supporting each individual to ensure they are not disadvantaged,” they said.

It later added: “A full internal investigation has been carried out and processes are being followed, in accordance with NESCol policies. It would not be appropriate to comment further on individual staffing matters.”
